Joël is a cooking app that suggests recipes based on what you write to it, your preferences and, if you choose, your photos. This page explains what data the app processes, why, for how long, and what you can do about it.
Who is responsible
Joël is published in France by an independent publisher. For any question about your data: contact@joel.recipes.

Who processes data for Joël
Joël relies on service providers that process data on its behalf, under their contractual commitments:
- Supabase (database, accounts, files), hosted in Paris, France.
- Vercel (servers for the app and the joel-app.com website), Paris region, France.
- Resend (sending emails: sign-in codes and, if you pre-registered, the launch message), United States.
- OpenAI (generating Joël's answers, analyzing the photos you send, transcribing dictation), United States. What you write or show Joël is sent to produce the answer; OpenAI does not use this data to train its models under its API terms.
- Vercel AI Gateway (generating recipe images from the title and ingredients, never from your personal data).
- Inngest (background tasks: images, notifications, account deletion).
- Google Firebase Cloud Messaging (sending notifications), and Google if you choose to sign in with your Google account.
- PostHog (usage measurement), hosted in Frankfurt, Germany, only if you turn on “Help improve Joël”.
Usage measurement
By default, Joël measures nothing. If you turn on “Help improve Joël” (when you first open the app or in the settings), the app sends technical events such as “a conversation was created” or “a recipe was added to favorites”, linked to your account ID. Never the content of your messages, never your photos, never your email address. You can turn this setting off at any time: nothing more is sent, and what was sent is deleted with your account.
Deleting your account
In the app, go to your personal information, then “Delete my account”. Your account, conversations, recipes, photos and progress are deleted 7 days after your request. Signing in again during those 7 days cancels the deletion. After that, nothing can be recovered.
Your rights
You can access your data, correct it, delete it, ask for a copy or object to its processing by writing to the contact address above. You can also file a complaint with the CNIL, the French data protection authority (cnil.fr), if you believe your rights are not respected.
Minors
Joël is intended for people aged 16 and over.
